This historic market town is a great site from which to explore the surrounding borough of Kirklees.
A true Yorkshire town, Huddersfield is characterised by strong traditions, beautiful architecture, and of course, award-winning real ale brews. Its once booming textiles industry promoted the town’s growth and allowed for the construction of magnificent Victorian buildings, including the award-winning Huddersfield Railway Station, previously described by John Betjeman as ‘the finest façade of any such building in the Country’. Huddersfield has an impressive 1,660 listed buildings, the third largest in the country after Westminster and Bristol
The town is host to poetry and jazz festivals, concerts and exhibitions, and the popular event, ‘A World Together’, a whole day of music and dance organised to celebrate global culture. Additionally, the annual Huddstock Charity Music Festival hosts over 70 live acts, with entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.
For the sports fans, the Rugby League Heritage Centre and the Galpharm Stadium, with integrated corporate, fitness and leisure facilities, are great stops to make as you tour the town. If shopping is your activity of choice, Kingsgate Shopping Centre, with everything from high-street fashion to department stores, is a mere ten minute walk from the station, and if you get hungry, Huddersfield’s town centre has a great selection of restaurants, pubs and bars guaranteed to cater to any palate.
From anywhere in the town, the towering Castle Hill, standing over 900 feet above sea level, can be seen, with Victoria Tower perched on its very top. Completed in 1899 to celebrate the 60th year of Queen Victoria’s reign, this site is open to the public on certain days and is a must-see if one’s trip allows, offering spectacular views of magnificent Yorkshire country.
Marsden Moor Estate, and Marsden and Standedge Tunnel End, are accessible from Huddersfield by bus, train or car, and promises breathtaking views of beautiful moorland with valleys, reservoirs peaks and crags. Tunnel End also provides an opportunity for a boat ride into the longest canal tunnel in the UK, nicely rounding up your romantic experience of Kirklees’ delightful countryside.
