The City of Bradford is famous for many things, not least as location for the National Media Museum (formerly the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television). As a result of this, Bradford has been named as UNESCO’s first ever “City of Film”. The National Media Museum is justly famous, and it is the country’s most popular museum outside London.
But Bradford has lots of other connections with the world of culture and the arts. One of its most famous sons is the artist David Hockney, and a permanent exhibition of over 400 of his works can be seen at Salt’s Mill in Saltaire on the outskirts of the City.
Other notable Bradfordians include: the composer Frederick Delius; the author JB Priestley; Richard Whiteley, the former presenter of TV’s Countdown; the Brontë sisters (born in Thornton on the outskirts of the city); singers Kiki Dee, Kimberley Walsh (Girls Aloud), and Gareth Gates; Simon Rouse (TV actor in The Bill); the film director Tony Richardson (Tom Jones, The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Phantom of the Opera); and Simon Beaufoy (screenwriter for the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire).
There’s many places to visit in Bradford, including museums, theatres, cinemas (including the Bradford IMAX), historic houses and parks. And the city is surrounded by some great walking country – Ilkley Moor is not far away and offers stunning scenery, though, as the song reminds us, it’s best to wear a hat & scarf if stepping out there in winter.
Bradford has so much to offer the visitor and not just for the culture. Within the city, its ethnic diversity is reflected in its indoor markets and excellent restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisines. One thing any visitor should do is try a curry in some of the country’s finest Asian restaurants – it is not for nothing that Bradford was voted Britain’s Curry Capital in 2004.
Interesting fact: the last trolleybus service in Britain ran in Bradford – and the last passenger journey occurred on 26 March 1972
